Delhi woke up to fluctuating winter temperatures on Tuesday, with both Safdarjung and Palam seeing slight variations from the usual seasonal patterns.
At 08:30 IST, the minimum temperature at Safdarjung was 10.5 degrees Celsius, an increase of 0.9 degrees Celsius from the previous day and 3.6 degrees Celsius above normal levels.
Meanwhile, Palam experienced a dip, registering 9.0 degrees Celsius, a drop of 0.5 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours, though still 2.5 degrees above the typical winter range.
The National Capital also faced ‘very poor’ air quality on Tuesday morning, with an air quality index (AQI) reading of 337 at 9:30 AM.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the AQI at 9:30 AM as follows:
- Alipur – 325,
- Ashok Vihar – 337,
- Bawana – 324, and
- RK Puram – 322, all categorized as ‘very poor’
Earlier today, Delhi was enveloped in dense fog as a cold wave swept through the city, bringing plunging temperatures and chilly winds.
The India Meteorological Department recorded 11.6 degrees Celsius at 5:30 AM.
The Met Department forecasted a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius for the day, with the maximum expected to reach 19 degrees Celsius.
Additionally, dense fog also anticipated to continue throughout the day.
In response to the severe cold, many individuals sought refuge at night shelters, where some gathered around bonfires to stay warm.
The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents to accommodate the homeless, with night shelters available across various locations in the city.
