A significant blaze erupted at the Ghazipur landfill site in the National Capital on Sunday evening and persists till now.
Efforts are underway to douse the blaze. No casualties are reported so far.
As per reports, the fire is caused by gas that is produced in the landfill.
Naresh Kumar, Delhi Fire Service stated, “We received a call around 6 PM that the Ghazipur landfill has caught fire.”
“10 fire brigades are at work here. 4 out of which are on the upper side of the mountain. The bowsers are stationed at the bottom,” Kumar added.
Delhi Fire Service SO asserted, “JCBs are being quite helpful as there is trouble in dousing the fire due to heat. The fire is caused due to gas that is produced in the landfill. There has been no casualty.”
A school girl from the area voiced, “We experienced throat irritation and persistent coughing due to the smoke. This fire has resulted in pollution, affecting everyone in the area.”
Another resident expressed concerns about respiratory problems. He accused the administration of neglect regarding the extensive fire.
He further highlighted that the smoke emanating from the blaze could severely affect elderly individuals.
Nazra, another local resident said, “Living here, the smoke is irritating our eyes. Breathing is becoming difficult. The entire community is disrupted. Last time, when the landfill ignited, there were casualties.”
The Ghazipur landfill reached a towering height of 65 meters by 2019, just eight meters shorter than the iconic Qutub Minar. Past incidents, such as a collapse in 2017 that claimed two lives, have underscored the hazards associated with the landfill.
