Collapse Details
The collapse occurred at a five-storey building in the congested Satya Niketan locality near Delhi University’s South Campus.
The premises housed students as paying guests and were reportedly known as Hostel Daze.
The building was estimated to be 40-50 years old. Repair and excavation work was taking place in the basement when the structure collapsed, leaving people trapped beneath the debris.
The circumstances surrounding the collapse are now under investigation, with the condition of the ageing structure and the work being carried out in the basement emerging as key areas of examination.
Police have registered an FIR in connection with the incident.
Emergency teams launched a large-scale search operation after the collapse. The NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and police took part in the operation.
Rescuers pulled several people from the rubble and shifted the injured to hospitals, including the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Some victims died in the incident, while others suffered injuries and a few remained in critical condition.
Operations continued into the evening as rescuers searched through the debris for anyone who could still be trapped.
The collapse caused panic in the densely populated locality, with witnesses reporting a loud rumble just before the building came down.
The incident has renewed concerns over the structural safety of old buildings being used as student accommodation in the area.
Senior officials and political leaders visited the site and hospitals to monitor the response and meet the injured.
