Delhi and Mumbai share the pleasure of monsoon’s first day together for the first time in the past six decades. Monsoon hit the national capital on Sunday which was 2 days ahead of the predictions while Mumbai got it 12 days late. This was much awaited by the citizens of the two metropolitan cities. It came as a great relief for the two.
According to IMD officials, the last time the monsoon arrived simultaneously in Delhi and Mumbai was on June 21, 1961. According to the regular dates, the system passes through Mumbai 16 days before moving north towards Delhi. However, this year’s monsoon had a strange series of circumstances that caused it to start weakly over Kerala and move slowly towards western India.
Monsoon set to reach south, central, and northern regions
Meteorologists have reported cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal that will be moving into the state of Odisha. Monsoon has now stepped into the active phase and is all set to reach south, central, and northern regions. This is likely to happen in the next five to seven days.
The monsoon has been moving steadily towards east and north India over the past few days while remaining stationary along the Arabian Sea arm of the Bay of Bengal. The development of a cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal in recent days transformed the situation.
Rain deficit to decrease in a week
According to the meteorology office, the June rainfall deficit nationwide, which was 28% below normal as of June 25th, is likely to gradually decrease over the next week. The system is also anticipated to cover more of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two days, as well as the entirety of J&K. With this monsoon season will come several Indian festivities and customs.
