Delhi Airport Operations Disruption Prompts Centre To Stabilize Airfare, Ensuring No Abnormal Surge

The Civil Aviation Ministry issued an advisory today urging airlines to prevent excessive price hikes on flights to and from Delhi following the collapse of a portion of the roof at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1. Operations at Terminal T1D were suspended after the incident, which tragically resulted in one fatality and injuries to several others, disrupting flights at one of the world’s busiest airports.

What the Ministry has to say?

The ministry instructed airlines to monitor and prevent abnormal surges in airfares related to Delhi routes and advised that flight cancellations and rescheduling due to the incident should not incur penalties. Initially, all departures from Terminal 1 were halted until midnight, affecting around 1,400 domestic flights handled daily.

Spiceket and Indio cancels multiple flights

IndiGo and SpiceJet, prominent low-cost carriers operating from Terminal 1, cancelled multiple flights and temporarily relocated operations to Terminals 2 and 3. Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the site, emphasizing the priority of passenger safety and ensuring a thorough structural assessment of the terminal.

Meanwhile, Delhi experienced heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day, providing relief from a prolonged heatwave but causing widespread disruption across the National Capital Region. The downpour, accumulating nearly 230 mm within 24 hours, led to flooded roads, severe traffic congestion, submerged vehicles, and stranded commuters in many areas of the city.
