Wayanad landslides Death toll on surge

The death toll in Wayanad landslides on Tuesday escalated to 84 while many are missing. Officials further added that hundreds are injured and admitted to hospitals.

The places that are most severely impacted are Mundakayil, Pothukalu, Churalpara, and Velarimala. The magnitude of the disaster has left the residents of these places who were able to flee completely devastated.

Principal Bhavya of the VHSE School in Velarimala has been making a lot of effort to get in touch with her students. She has spoken with 560 pupils thus far, with 22 students still unreachable.

“There are 582 students in my school and I am yet to contact 22. I hope they are safe and I only believe that their phones are out of charge. It’s been raining heavily for the past two days. In the fury, there has been damage to our school. I spoke to many of my teachers also,” said Bhavvya.

NDRF team has reached Mundakayil and commenced operation as the area has severely been impacted by nature’s fury. Many houses are destroyed.

The largest rescue operations, being carried out, in the state involve the Army, NDRF, Fire Force, Police, and a horde of individuals from surrounding afflicted areas.

Bad weather is hampering the rescue efforts, particularly the intense rain in the worst-hit areas, according to an NDRF officer.

“There are areas which we are yet to reach because of the bad weather and we are doing everything to reach such areas,” said the NDRF official.

Meanwhile, there are reports from Churalpara that a fresh landslide has occurred in the area and it was raining heavily in the area, leaving the rescue team members in a tight spot.
