The Meteorological Department has reported that Cyclone Remal, originating from the Bay of Bengal, is likely to make landfall off the coast of Kolkata tonight (May 26). Authorities have been instructed to be on high alert, with disaster management teams prepared for immediate action. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed in a detailed meeting regarding the preparations and expected impacts of Cyclone Remal.

Wind Speeds of 110-120 km/h Expected

Cyclone Remal is projected to be a significant threat to the Indian subcontinent. Moving from the Bay of Bengal, it poses a danger to West Bengal, with coastal areas bracing for strong winds and heavy rain. The Meteorological Department forecasts that the cyclone could hit the coast at speeds of 110-120 km/h. The storm is also expected to generate 1.5-meter high waves, threatening to flood coastal regions of West Bengal and parts of Bangladesh.

Disaster Management Preparedness

A comprehensive disaster management plan has been put in place, and a warning has been issued for fishermen to avoid the northern parts of the Bay of Bengal until the morning of May 27. The impact of Cyclone Ramal is likely to bring rain to West Bengal, Odisha, Mizoram, and Bihar.

An official statement from the Meteorological Department noted, “Cyclone Ramal will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next few hours and is expected to be seen as a severe cyclonic storm between the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal by midnight on May 26.”
