In a recent turn of events, the vacation schedules of judges have come under intense scrutiny, sparking debates across legal circles.

The criticism reached its peak when a published article took a harsh stance against judicial holidays, igniting a nationwide conversation on the matter.

Kiren Rijiju, the current Law Minister, also joined the chorus of voices questioning the necessity and impact of judicial vacations.

The issue gained prominence during a hearing where the Supreme Court openly expressed its dissatisfaction with the ongoing criticism surrounding vacation periods.

During the proceedings, a bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma voiced their frustrations, highlighting their relentless dedication even during supposed breaks.

Justice Datta emphasized that despite burning the midnight oil to review petitions during vacations, judges find themselves subjected to unwarranted criticism.

He further noted the judiciary’s tendency to pardon government delays, allowing proceedings to move forward.

However, Justice Datta acknowledged the ease with which judges become targets of public ire due to their inability to respond directly to criticism.

He underscored that judges, burdened with an overwhelming workload, carry out their duties diligently, often without acknowledgment.

Supporting this sentiment, Justice Satish Chandra Sharma emphasized that most high courts prioritize cases despite the ongoing debate surrounding judicial vacations.

He lamented that while judges tirelessly fulfill their responsibilities, their efforts often go unnoticed amidst the clamor of criticism.

The debate was further fueled by remarks from Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai.

Chandrachud and Gavai highlighted the misconception surrounding judges’ vacations. They emphasized the relentless commitment of judges who often sacrifice personal time to deliver justice.
