Counting trends from the West Bengal Assembly elections indicated a closely contested fight on Monday morning, with the Bharatiya Janata Party holding a slight advantage over the ruling All India Trinamool Congress after the first two hours.
By 10 AM, figures released for 176 of the total 293 constituencies showed the BJP ahead in 90 seats, while the Trinamool Congress was leading in 82.
The Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had early leads in two constituencies each.
Congress leads were confined to Malatipur and Mothabari in Malda district. In Malatipur, Mausam Benazir Noor was ahead, having rejoined Congress ahead of the polls. CPI(M) candidates were, however, leading in Jalangi and Domkal constituencies in Murshidabad district.
Several senior BJP figures were ahead in their respective seats. Suvendu Adhikari was leading in Nandigram in East Midnapore, while Dilip Ghosh was ahead in Kharagpur (Sadar). Agnimitra Paul was leading in Asansol (Dakshin), and Swapan Dasgupta was also among those ahead.
On the Trinamool side, some Ministers were facing early setbacks. Sashi Panja, who handles Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, was trailing in the Shyampukur constituency.
No early data was available for the Bhabanipur seat in south Kolkata, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting against Adhikari in one of the most closely watched battles.
Counting is being conducted in multiple stages across constituencies, with each seat undergoing between ten and 26 rounds depending on voter size.
