Counting Day Begins Across Five States As High-Stakes Election Results Expected

Vote counting for the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Keralam, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry commenced on Monday morning, with final outcomes likely to become clear by the end of the day as successive rounds of counting progress.

These elections saw participation from nearly 25 crore voters, marking one of the most significant democratic exercises in recent years.

West Bengal recorded an exceptional voter turnout of 92.93 per cent, reflecting intense public engagement.

Counting is currently underway in 293 out of 294 constituencies.

The Election Commission has ordered a re-poll in the Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas, scheduled for May 21, with the result to be declared later on May 24.

Security arrangements remain strict at key counting centres, including Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium.

The political contest in West Bengal remains closely watched, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking another term while facing a strong challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has expanded its presence in the state in recent years.

In Tamil Nadu, voter turnout reached 85.1 per cent. The contest, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK, has taken a new turn with the entry of actor Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

Early projections suggest the DMK-led alliance is in a strong position. The new entrant, however, appears to be gaining traction, particularly in urban regions such as Chennai and Madurai.

Keralam presents a closely fought battle. The ruling Left Democratic Front, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, is attempting to secure a rare third consecutive term.

Projections, however, indicate a tight race, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front expected to remain competitive in the 140-seat Assembly.

A strong performance by the UDF could have wider implications for national politics.

In Assam, the political picture appears more stable. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is likely to perform strongly, with expectations of retaining power comfortably.

Opposition efforts, including a multi-party alliance led by Congress, have faced challenges in countering the ruling coalition’s organisational strength.

As counting continues through the day, clearer trends are likely to emerge, shaping the political direction in these key states.
