Peru Landslide: Landslides triggered by heavy rains swept mud, water, and rocks into several villages in southern Peru, killing at least 36 people. According to the Associated Press, five people were killed when their van was pushed into a river by a mudslide. Wilson Gutierrez, a civil defense official in Camana province’s Mariano Nicols Valcrcel municipality, said 36 bodies had been recovered in a remote sector called Miski.

Local officials also requested that heavy machinery be sent in to clear debris that was blocking three kilometers of an important road. Landslides also destroyed bridges and irrigation canals. Continuous rains are common in February in Peru, causing deadly landslides.
