Pawan Khera Calls For Nationwide Focus On Women’s Safety

Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera praised President Droupadi Murmu for addressing the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Hospital. However, Khera stressed that the issue of women’s safety extends beyond West Bengal and demands attention across the entire country.

“We appreciate President Murmu’s concern regarding the tragic incident in Kolkata. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that women’s safety is a significant issue not only in Bengal but also in other regions, including Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh, Badlapur in Maharashtra, Jodhpur in Rajasthan, and other states such as Madhya Pradesh and Assam,” Khera said.

Khera highlighted a recent incident in Farrukhabad where authorities found the bodies of two girls hanging from a tree and cremated them quickly. He suggested that President Murmu’s statement should have encompassed these broader concerns to avoid the impression that the focus is solely on one state.

In her article titled ‘Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough’, President Murmu expressed her anguish over the Kolkata case. She recalled a moment during Raksha Bandhan when schoolchildren visiting Rashtrapati Bhavan asked if they could be assured that such heinous incidents, similar to the Nirbhaya case, would not occur again.

Khera On Mamata Banerjee’s Comment

Khera also addressed comments made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had accused the BJP of inciting violence in West Bengal. Banerjee warned that unrest in her state could potentially spread to other regions, including Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi.

Responding to these concerns, Khera remarked, “The issue of women’s security transcends state boundaries. It is a nationwide concern that affects every state and has sparked protests everywhere due to our collective failure to protect women effectively.”

Khera’s remarks reflect the growing demand for a unified national response to violence against women, urging officials to address safety concerns across all parts of the country.
