Congress Begins Introspection After Lok Sabha Election Defeat

After a crushing Lok Sabha defeat, Congress is examining the causes of its poor performance in key states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi.

CONGRESS

In the wake of a crushing defeat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the Indian National Congress has embarked on a rigorous self-examination to determine the underlying causes of its poor performance across several key states, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the formation of six fact-finding committees to investigate the reasons behind the electoral losses.

The committee assigned to scrutinize the defeat in Madhya Pradesh includes Prithviraj Chavan, Saptagiri Shankar Ulka, and Jignesh Mevani.

These committees will visit their states, engage with local leaders and party workers, and gather comprehensive feedback from all regions, not just the state party headquarters.

They will compile their findings into reports and submit them to Kharge for further analysis.

The magnitude of the defeat is stark. In Chhattisgarh, Congress managed to secure only one of the 40 Lok Sabha seats. In Madhya Pradesh, the situation was equally grim.

The party, which had won two seats in 2014 and one in 2019, failed to secure a single seat in 2024, with all 29 seats going to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Furthermore, the vote share for Congress in Madhya Pradesh plummeted from 38% in 2019 to 30% in 2024.

The committees’ investigations however will span multiple locations within each state to ensure a thorough understanding of the electoral dynamics and grassroots sentiments.

The party hopes this introspection will help chart a path to recovery and future electoral success.

As Congress grapples with these setbacks, the findings from the fact-finding committees will be crucial in shaping the party’s strategy and reforms moving forward.
