The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully carried out a rescue operation of two crew members aboard a US sailing yacht, Sea Angel.
The vessel was stranded around 52 nautical miles southeast of Indira Point in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The operation concluded on Friday morning. The ICG towed the disabled yacht to the safety of Campbell Bay harbour.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the incident occurred on 10 July. The yacht suffered severe mechanical issues in rough sea conditions. A blown sail and a tangled propeller left it adrift.
Upon receiving a distress alert, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Port Blair activated rescue protocols. It also alerted nearby merchant ships. ICG Ship Rajveer was deployed to the area without delay.
The Coast Guard team made contact with the crew and conducted an on-site inspection. Despite the poor weather and mechanical failure, both individuals were found safe and in good health.
After securing the crew, the ICG team towed the Sea Angel back to the harbour. The mission was marked as successfully completed.
Navy’s earlier operation in the Arabian Sea
Just days earlier, the Indian Navy had also carried out a critical rescue operation.
On 29 June, INS Tabar responded to a Mayday call from Palau-flagged tanker MT Yi Cheng 6. The vessel had caught fire in the engine room about 80 nautical miles east of Fujairah, UAE.
INS Tabar was on a mission-based deployment in the North Arabian Sea. It raced to the spot, established contact with the tanker’s master, and launched firefighting efforts.
The Navy ensured the safety of 14 Indian crew members on board.
The MoD said both these incidents reflect the Indian Coast Guard and Navy’s rapid response and firm commitment to seafarer safety and maritime security in the region.
