Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant at Chapar in Dhubri district.
The ₹48,000-crore project will strengthen the state’s power generation capacity and create employment opportunities.
The project will comprise four 800 MW units and use ultra-supercritical technology, with Adani Power commissioning the plant in phases.
The plant will create up to 20,000 jobs during construction and around 5,000 once operational. Adani Power has identified Chapar as a greenfield 3,200 MW facility.

The Chapar plant forms part of an estimated ₹63,000-crore power investment in Assam, including around ₹15,000 crore for two pumped storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW. Adani Power had received a Letter of Award from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited for the 3,200 MW project.
Sarma said the project would strengthen Assam’s position as an energy hub while creating jobs and boosting local businesses and state revenues.
Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Group, said the investment would support reliable power supply and create opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.
The project will also benefit transport operators and service providers, with transmission infrastructure being developed to evacuate power from the Chapar plant.
The Adani Group is also expanding its investments in Assam’s aviation, infrastructure, energy and connectivity sectors.
The Chapar project marks a major addition to Assam’s planned power infrastructure, with its development expected to support electricity requirements for households, businesses and industries while creating new economic opportunities in the region.
