Delhi Police took Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder and convener Abhijeet Dipke into custody on Friday while he was travelling to Central Park in Connaught Place for a planned ‘Tiranga Assembly’ at 5 PM.
The action came after police issued two notices advising Dipke against proceeding with the gathering.
Officials said the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) had not granted permission for the event and that restrictions on public gatherings remained active at the location. They warned of legal consequences for anyone violating the prohibitory orders.
According to officials, New Delhi district authorities issued one notice under the Delhi Police Act, asking people to stay away from Central Park because Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was in force.
The second notice came from South West Delhi authorities and referred to an earlier legal undertaking involving Dipke and CJP co-conveners Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das.
The three had previously faced preventive detention at an airport and were subsequently produced before a court.
Officials said a court directive required them to avoid activities that could disturb public order for one year.
Before his detention, Dipke defended the party’s demonstrations and described peaceful protest as a democratic right. He accused the government of restricting civil liberties and affecting businesses through shutdowns, internet suspensions and limits on public movement.
Dipke said citizens should be able to demand accountability, challenge injustice and question public representatives without facing allegations of creating anarchy. He reiterated the party’s commitment to Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, despite what he described as attempts to provoke its members.
Dipke added that CJP had held peaceful demonstrations in Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Nagpur.
