CID Takes Over Investigation Of Alleged Custodial Death In West Bengal

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will probe the death of Abu Siddik Halder, who allegedly died from police torture while in custody in Dholahat, West Bengal.

This decision follows a petition filed by Halder’s family at Calcutta High Court, which demanded a thorough investigation.

Justice Amrita Sinha responded by ordering a second post-mortem of Halder’s body and sending the viscera report to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Hyderabad for further analysis.

The court also instructed the police to ensure the safety of the victim’s family and witnesses.

The next date of hearing in the matter is July 22.

Police arrested Halder on June 30 for allegedly stealing jewelry. He died on July 8, four days after a District Court in South 24 Parganas released him on bail.

His family claims he showed visible injuries from beatings while in custody and that his condition worsened after his release.

He initially received treatment at a local hospital, then moved to a hospital in Kolkata, and finally transferred to a private nursing home, where he died on the night of July 8.
