Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the Climate Conference on faith and climate change at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Sunday. The event emphasized the critical connection between humanity, nature, and the survival of all living beings. CM Yogi stressed the importance of immediate action to prevent catastrophic environmental consequences.
In his address, CM Yogi underscored the deep bond between humans and nature, stating, “If nature thrives, we thrive; if it’s in danger, so is our existence.” He urged everyone to act now for a greener planet, echoing the Maha Kumbh’s message of environmental consciousness. “We must not wait for a catastrophe to take action. It is our duty to work towards a greener earth now,” he added.
Balancing Faith With Climate Action
Emphasizing the need to combine faith with environmental responsibility, CM Yogi explained that safeguarding nature and wildlife is essential for the survival of human civilization. He linked the spirit of the Kumbh Mela to the larger mission of sustainable development, encouraging people to integrate eco-friendly practices into their daily lives.
Honoring The Departed Souls
During the event, the Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident in Delhi, paying tribute to the departed souls. He extended condolences to the families affected, highlighting the importance of solidarity during times of grief.

CM Yogi also addressed logistical issues at the Maha Kumbh, particularly traffic congestion caused by visitors parking improperly. He noted that aerial surveys showed empty parking spaces while vehicles were parked along roads, obstructing smooth traffic flow. He urged devotees to park only in designated areas, even if it meant walking a little further, ensuring a better and safer experience for everyone.
A Record Number Of Devotees And Environmental Concerns
From January 13 to February 16, a record 52 crore devotees visited the sacred confluence of Maa Ganga, Yamuna, and Maa Saraswati. CM Yogi attributed this extraordinary turnout to the uninterrupted flow of water in the rivers, which he described as a divine blessing. “The continuous flow of water allows the pilgrims to experience spiritual energy and share it with their communities, inspiring more people to partake in this event,” he remarked.
However, he warned that climate change, driven by carbon emissions and environmental pollution, threatens the delicate balance of the Earth’s ecosystems. He compared the rivers to the arteries of the Earth, emphasizing that just as a body cannot survive if its arteries dry up, the same fate awaits the planet if its rivers are polluted or depleted.
Government’s Proactive Measures
The Uttar Pradesh government has taken significant steps to combat environmental challenges. The state has banned single-use plastic and planted 210 crore saplings over the past eight years, with high survival rates for the trees. Additionally, the government is promoting electric buses to reduce diesel vehicle emissions and is actively working on the restoration of dying rivers to ensure the flow of natural water.
CM Yogi also highlighted the transformation of the Sangam area, where millions of devotees can now take a holy dip daily, a sight previously seen only during Mauni Amavasya. The river channelization and expansion of the Sangam area have ensured a steady water flow of 10,000 to 11,000 cusecs, making the grand spiritual event more accessible and sustainable.
While the government continues its efforts, CM Yogi stressed that public participation is vital in protecting the environment. He urged the people to reflect on their daily habits, eliminate plastic, avoid encroaching on rivers, prevent pollution, and show compassion for wildlife.
Interconnected Survival Of Humans And Earth
CM Yogi concluded with a powerful reminder: “Just as humans have a life cycle, so does Mother Earth. Our survival is intertwine. Only by preserving both can the universe thrive.” He encouraged everyone to take simple yet meaningful actions, such as planting a tree in honor of one’s mother and another as an offering of faith.
The event was attended by distinguished figures, including Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati, Swami Chidanand Saraswati Muni of Paramarth Ashram, Jagadguru Swami Mukundanand, Forest and Environment Minister Dr. Arun Kumar Saxena, and Minister of State KP Malik, along with MLAs and officials.
