Five Maoists were killed in two separate encounters with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, police officials said on Saturday. The ongoing operation in Indravati National Park has so far resulted in the deaths of seven Maoists over three days.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the success and expressed his desire to meet the security personnel involved in the anti-Maoist mission.
“Security forces have recovered the bodies of seven Maoists during the ongoing operations,” a police officer said. The encounters began on 5 June and continued through to 7 June.
Among those killed were senior Maoist leaders Sudhakar and Bhaskar.
Sudhakar, a Central Committee Member, was gunned down on 5 June. He was known for setting up Maoist education centres in the Dandakaranya region.
On the next day, security forces killed Bhaskar, a commander of the Telangana State Committee. Both deaths have dealt a heavy blow to the Maoist leadership in the region.
During the night of 6–7 June, the bodies of three more Maoists — two women and a man — were recovered.
On Saturday, two more male Maoists were killed in another exchange of fire. Their identities are yet to be confirmed.
Security personnel recovered arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles and Maoist documents, from the encounter sites. Several soldiers suffered injuries from snake bites, dehydration, and honeybee stings, but all are in stable condition after treatment.
Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma confirmed the recovery of the seven bodies, including those of Sudhakar and Bhaskar. Search and area domination operations continue in the dense forest.
Officials said a full report on the recovered arms and material will follow. The state continues to step up efforts to eliminate Maoist threats and restore peace in the region.
