Chennai has placed 15,000 police personnel on security duty ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Sunday, October 11, with a five-tier arrangement covering key locations across the city.
Police Commissioner A Amalraj reviewed the preparations with senior officers at the Commissionerate in Vepery on Friday, October 9.
The deployment includes joint, deputy and assistant commissioners, alongside personnel from the law and order, crime and traffic wings.
Armed reserve personnel, commandos and Tamil Nadu Special Police units will provide additional support.
Security has been strengthened at Chennai airport, Porur Bypass Metro railway station, IIT-Madras in Kotturpuram, Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam and Lok Bhavan in Guindy.
Officers are conducting vehicle checks along routes planned for the Prime Minister’s movement and inspecting lodges, guest houses and star hotels to identify suspicious individuals.
Railway stations, Metro facilities and bus terminals are also under heightened surveillance.
As part of the precautionary measures, police have designated areas around Meenambakkam, Guindy, Kotturpuram, Porur and Nandambakkam as red zones for Friday, October 10.
Restrictions also apply to routes identified for PM Modi’s movement.
The authorities have prohibited the use of drones and other unmanned aerial objects within the notified areas.
The arrangements aim to secure the Prime Minister’s scheduled engagements while maintaining surveillance across transport facilities, accommodation centres and surrounding neighbourhoods.
