The MHA said authorities detained Sonam Wangchuk on 26 September 2025 following a serious law and order situation in Leh on 24 September.
The District Magistrate of Leh ordered the detention under the National Security Act to maintain public order. Officials added that Wangchuk had already served nearly half of the detention period.
The MHA stated that the government has been actively engaging with community leaders and various stakeholders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people. Authorities emphasised that dialogue and cooperation remain key to resolving the issues facing the region.
However, the ministry also pointed out that the prevailing atmosphere of bandhs and protests had disrupted daily life and negatively affected several sections of society.
Continued protests have affected students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators, and tourists, impacting the local economy.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Ladakh while addressing local concerns through institutional mechanisms.
Officials expressed hope that dialogue and platforms such as the High-Powered Committee will help resolve governance and development issues in the region.
The MHA concluded that the revocation of Wangchuk’s detention reflects the government’s intention to create an environment conducive to dialogue and cooperation, with the aim of ensuring long-term stability and development in the region.
