Emergency: Government Declares June 25 As ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ To Mark Historical Event

The BJP-led Central government announced that June 25 will now be observed as “Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas” to commemorate the imposition of the Emergency in 1975. This decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration aims to honor those who suffered during that period and to remind India never to tolerate such abuses of power again.

The Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975, under the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi, suspending civil rights across the country for over two years. The government’s notification, shared by Home Minister Amit Shah, emphasized the severe abuse of power during that time, highlighting the plight of millions who faced oppression and atrocities.

“Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas” is intended to keep the memory of those who fought against the Emergency alive, according to Home Minister Amit Shah. He criticized former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for what he described as a dictatorial act that stifled democracy, leading to widespread arrests and media censorship.

Amit Shah underscored the importance of remembering this dark chapter in India’s history to safeguard individual freedom and defend democracy from authoritarian tendencies. The observance of this day, he believes, will prevent any future recurrence of such abuses of power.
