The initiative follows statements by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in both Houses of Parliament, where he described the developments as an unprecedented crisis with possible long-term implications.
The conflict has entered its fourth week, affecting key shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz. These disruptions have led to instability in global energy markets and increased worries about supply chains and inflation.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have called for a detailed debate in Parliament.
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the government’s preference for a briefing over a full discussion, arguing that the seriousness of the matter requires broader deliberation.
In the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also criticised the government, alleging that personal factors rather than national priorities are influencing foreign policy decisions. While he supported the idea of the meeting, he said he would be unable to attend due to a prior engagement in Kerala.
The meeting takes place a day after Rajnath Singh led a high-level security review attended by Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, the heads of the three armed forces, and senior officials, including Samir V Kamat.
As geopolitical tensions continue to rise and their global effects become clearer, the meeting is expected to serve as a platform for the government to update opposition leaders and work towards a broader political consensus on India’s response.
