The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of six senior advocates as Additional Solicitor Generals (ASG) in the Supreme Court. The appointed advocates are S Dwarakanath, Archana Pathak Dave, Satya Darshi Sanjay, Brijender Chahar, Raghavendra P. Shankar, and Rajkumar Bhaskar Thakare (Raja Thakare). They will serve for three years or until further orders.
Strengthening the Centre’s Legal Team
These appointments aim to strengthen the Union government’s legal representation in the Supreme Court. The ASGs, while not holding a constitutional post, assist the Attorney General and Solicitor General in defending the Union’s interests.
Re-Appointments in June
In June, the ACC re-appointed Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General of India for three years. It also re-appointed KM Nataraj, Vikramjit Banerjee, SV Raju, N Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati as ASGs for the Supreme Court. These law officers exclusively represent the Union government in the apex court or any high court.
