The Delhi Police on Friday urged the public to comply with prohibitory orders around Connaught Place ahead of a planned gathering at Central Park at 5 PM on October 16, where participants have been asked to carry the national flag.
The restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) aim to maintain law and order and protect lives and public and private property.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Neha Yadav said in a video message on Thursday that the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had appealed to their workers, supporters and members of the public to join the gathering in large numbers.
The police warned that anyone participating in an assembly that violates the order could face legal action. They further stressed the need to prevent disruptions to traders and shopkeepers in the area.
The force may consider providing a designated location for a select group to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem, provided they follow prescribed guidelines and maintain due respect and decorum.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has informed the police that Central Park will remain closed on October 16 and 17 for administrative reasons. It has sought security arrangements to prevent unauthorised entry.
Yadav said trade and market associations around Connaught Place had sought protection for their shops and establishments against disruptive activities and unlawful gatherings. They said such incidents during the festive season were affecting their businesses.
The Delhi High Court has taken note of concerns over possible disruptions to commercial activities in the area.
The police have, however, assured that they will take appropriate measures to address these concerns and maintain peace.
