Central Government Reaffirms Commitment To Development In Arunachal Pradesh

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reaffirmed the Central government’s dedication to the development of Arunachal Pradesh and the entire northeastern region during a virtual event on Monday. In her address, she pledged ongoing financial and administrative support for future projects, emphasizing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi prioritizes the region, which encompasses eight states.

Infrastructure Projects Launched

Sitharaman inaugurated five key infrastructure projects under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), with a total investment exceeding Rs 86 crore. The projects include the upgradation of district hospitals in Khonsa and Changlang, road construction in Pasighat, flood protection and sheet piling at Deobeel, and the development of cluster Minor Irrigation Projects (MIPs) in Lower Siang.

Chief Minister’s Remarks

In response, Chief Minister Pema Khandu highlighted the unprecedented focus the northeastern region has received in Union Budgets since 2014. He noted that prior to this, the region was often overlooked. “Every Central budget now reflects the importance of the northeast region.

A budget without the northeast in focus is incomplete,” he remarked, acknowledging the unique infrastructure challenges faced by the state while praising the progress made with the Central government’s assistance.

Khandu also pointed out that state revenue has increased significantly, crediting the government’s support for the region’s development.

Focus on Hydropower Potential

The Chief Minister emphasized Arunachal Pradesh’s vast hydropower potential, asserting that the state could make significant contributions to the national economy through hydropower projects. He expressed gratitude for the Central Government’s efforts in ensuring state equity in these initiatives.

Infrastructure Upgrades Needed

Khandu stressed the urgent need to upgrade outdated infrastructure throughout Arunachal Pradesh, noting that many existing structures are of SPT type. He called for a rapid transition to Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) structures to enhance durability and safety.

Additionally, he highlighted the low Credit-Deposit (CD) ratio in the state, requesting continued support from the Union Finance Minister to expand banking services.

He acknowledged the establishment of the State Bank of India (SBI) Regional Business Office in Arunachal Pradesh and urged for similar facilities in western parts of the state.

Khandu also pointed out the difficulties faced in obtaining infrastructure loans due to external interventions, calling for a more supportive environment for financing development projects.

As the Central government continues to invest in the region, both officials expressed optimism about the future of Arunachal Pradesh and its role in the broader economic landscape of India.
