The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unveiled a significant international dimension in the financial scandal involving RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
The agency’s probe into the alleged financial misconduct at the hospital has revealed ties to Bangladesh, specifically regarding the illegal export of biomedical waste.
Investigators have identified two Bangladeshi nationals who were frequently visiting Kolkata and establishing close relationships with Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, who is currently under judicial custody.
Ghosh faces charges related to financial irregularities at the institution.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, these individuals were instrumental in facilitating the smuggling of biomedical waste, including saline bottles, syringes, and needles, from the hospital.
The waste, which should have followed stringent protocols for disposal, instead ended up on the black market.
The CBI has yet to disclose the identities of the Bangladeshi businessmen involved in the procurement of medical equipment and their distribution to hospitals in Bangladesh.
Additionally, it has been revealed that Prasun Chattopadhyay, Ghosh’s personal assistant who was officially employed as a data entry operator at Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital, also had significant interactions with these individuals.
Central agencies have highlighted that the smuggling operation was a crucial component of the broader financial scam.
Records show a stark discrepancy between the amount of biomedical waste reported as disposed of by RG Kar and that of comparable state-run medical institutions.
This irregularity suggests a deliberate effort to underreport waste disposal and divert it for illegal sale.
The investigation continues as the CBI delves deeper into the network of individuals involved and their roles in this extensive scandal.
