In the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has requested permission from a special court in Kolkata to conduct a narco-analysis test on Sanjay Roy, the primary suspect.
This move follows a polygraph test previously administered to Roy.
The CBI’s application for narco-analysis aims to complement the findings from the polygraph test.
While the polygraph, or lie detector, assesses physiological responses such as blood pressure and pulse to detect deceit, the narco-analysis involves administering sodium pentothal, known as the truth serum, to induce a state of hypnosis in which the subject is believed to disclose the truth.
It is important to note that both tests require the subject’s consent.
On Wednesday evening, CBI officials also took Roy’s dental impressions, which are often crucial in forensic investigations, particularly in cases of rape and murder.
Since Roy remains the only suspect in custody, authorities consider this evidence as significant.
The Kolkata Police’s special investigation team initially detained Roy and conducted the preliminary probe. Later, the Calcutta High Court directed the case to the CBI.
The CBI’s current focus is twofold:
- To ascertain whether Roy acted alone or if others were involved, and
- To investigate potential evidence tampering and procedural lapses by the city police during the initial investigation
The agency’s comprehensive approach underscores its commitment to uncovering the full extent of the crime and ensuring justice for the victim.
