The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) intensified its probe into financial irregularities linked to RG Kar Medical College & Hospital by conducting searches at multiple locations, including the residence and private nursing home of Dr. Sudipto Roy, a four-term Trinamool Congress MLA from Serampore in Hooghly district.
The investigative agency’s team arrived at Roy’s residence near Sinthi crossing in North Kolkata around 1:15 PM to initiate search and interrogation procedures.
Insights
Roy, a prominent figure in the state’s healthcare sector, holds key positions, including the chairman of RG Kar’s patients’ welfare committee and a seat on the West Bengal Medical Recruitment Board.
He is also a former president of the West Bengal Medical Council.
The agency conducted simultaneous operations at his nearby private nursing home, further expanding the scope of the investigation.
Sources indicate that the CBI aims to record Roy’s statement during the course of the probe.
The focus is on alleged financial malpractices, specifically concerning the disposal and smuggling of biomedical waste from RG Kar Medical College.
The agency’s investigation revealed that they sold a significant portion of biomedical waste, including saline bottles, syringes, and needles, for reuse instead of disposing of it according to strict guidelines.
This violation of safety protocols forms a critical part of the financial mismanagement under scrutiny.
Adding to the intensity of the operation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted concurrent raids at three different locations across the city, including the ancestral home of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar.
Ghosh has been linked to controversies surrounding his tenure at the hospital, making him a focal point in the broader investigation.
Initial findings suggest discrepancies in the reported quantities of biomedical waste disposed of by RG Kar Medical College compared to other government hospitals of similar size, which has raised red flags about possible fraudulent practices.
The probe into these irregularities continues, with both the CBI and ED working in tandem to uncover the full extent of the financial scam.
