The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) withdrew the stringent GRAP Stage IV restrictions across Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, following a marginal yet steady improvement in air quality levels.
The curbs had remained in force since January 17 amid severe pollution conditions.
CAQM officials stated that Delhi’s daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) has shown a consistent downward trend over the past three days.
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI stood at 440 on January 18. It dropped to 410 on Monday and further improved to 378 on Tuesday.
Observing this decline, the CAQM Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan convened to assess the prevailing air quality and upcoming weather forecasts.
The panel reviewed projections provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) before taking a final call.
After deliberations, the committee unanimously decided to revoke GRAP Stage IV measures with immediate effect across the National Capital Region.
The Commission noted that Stage IV restrictions disrupt economic activity and daily life for a large section of the public. The improving AQI trend prompted the authorities to ease the harshest controls.
However, CAQM clarified that preventive and restrictive actions under GRAP Stages I, II, and III will continue.
Agencies across Delhi-NCR will enforce, monitor, and review these measures closely to prevent a renewed spike in pollution levels over the coming days.
The Commission also issued a clear warning to construction and demolition sites. Projects earlier shut down for violating statutory directions, environmental norms, or pollution control guidelines will remain closed.
Such sites cannot resume operations without explicit written permission from CAQM.
Officials stressed that the air quality situation remains fragile despite the improvement. They urged all implementing agencies to stay alert and ensure strict compliance with the remaining GRAP measures.
CAQM reiterated its commitment to taking swift action if pollution levels worsen again.
The Commission said it will continue to track AQI trends daily and adjust restrictions as required to safeguard public health.
