Can Opposition Shut Down Parliament Over Political Demands? Kiren Rijiju Responds

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Constitution provides the Opposition with several avenues to challenge the government and scrutinise its decisions. He said Opposition parties can question the government, criticise its policies, stage protests, propose amendments and vote against government measures.

The Minister argued that these constitutional rights do not allow the Opposition to bring Parliament to a standstill whenever political demands remain unfulfilled.

Rijiju stressed that Parliament does not belong exclusively to either the government or the Opposition. He said the institution represents the people of India and must function in accordance with the mandate given by voters.

The Union Minister argued that the electoral mandate should not become irrelevant whenever Opposition parties choose disruption instead of parliamentary debate.

Rijiju’s remarks emphasised the importance of maintaining democratic debate within Parliament. He suggested that Opposition parties should use established parliamentary mechanisms to express disagreement and hold the government accountable.

According to his argument, questioning policies, raising concerns and voting against government proposals form an essential part of the Opposition’s role in a democracy.

At the same time, Rijiju maintained that repeated disruption cannot replace meaningful discussion inside the House.

The comments come amid continuing political disagreements over issues raised by Opposition parties in Parliament.

Rijiju’s statement underlined the government’s position that parliamentary proceedings should continue even when political differences remain unresolved. He stressed that Parliament carries a responsibility towards citizens who elect their representatives.

The remarks have once again highlighted the broader debate over protest and political opposition. They have renewed discussion on the smooth functioning of India’s parliamentary democracy.

Rijiju’s message called on Opposition parties to exercise their constitutional rights through debate, scrutiny and voting. He urged them to allow Parliament to perform its role as the representative institution of the people.
