BSES, the electricity provider, has successfully activated 6,000 rooftop solar installations and plans to initiate over 1,000 more connections within the 2024-25 financial year, as announced by officials on Friday. According to reports, the majority of rooftop solar connections belong to the domestic sector (3,650), followed by commercial (1,087), educational (939), industrial (85), and other sectors (129).
In a statement, BSES expressed immense satisfaction with the response received for rooftop solar net metering within its area of operation. They highlighted the significant embrace of rooftop solar net metering by consumers across various categories such as residential, educational institutions, and commercial establishments.
The commercial segment holds the highest energized load with 57 Megawatt peak (MWp), trailed by the educational segment with 45 MWp, industrial with 6 MWp, and others with 11 MWp.

BSES officials additionally disclosed that more than 100 residential societies have opted for rooftop solar connections, resulting in an annual savings of over Rs. 110 crore for consumers.
They emphasized the advantages consumers experience with rooftop solar net metering, stating that connections ranging from 1 KW to over 4,000 KW have been energized. Consumers are recognizing the benefits of reduced electricity bills through this initiative.
Rooftop solar net metering is being hailed as an efficient means to cut down electricity expenses and contribute positively to the environment. It is estimated that every KW of rooftop solar generates about 100 to 120 units of electricity monthly, allowing for the recovery of the system’s cost in approximately four years. Notably, a typical 10 KW rooftop solar connection, with a monthly consumption of 1,200 units, can save approximately Rs 82,000 annually, officials confirmed.

Furthermore, BSES highlighted that apart from aiding in meeting its renewable purchase obligation (RPO), this initiative will assist the discom in reducing overloading issues in congested areas, particularly during peak summer months.
On the other hand, Tata Power-DDL has energized 2,412 rooftop solar connections, contributing to a solar load of 63.3 MWp and resulting in consumer savings of approximately Rs 45-50 crore annually.
