WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the warm welcome at the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi and praised the bloc’s commitment to strengthening global health cooperation.
In a post on X, Tedros welcomed the BRICS leaders’ support for the World Health Organisation and multilateralism. He further highlighted commitments to universal health coverage, resilient health systems, digital health, strengthening the health workforce, traditional medicine and achieving ‘Health For All’.

The New Delhi Declaration, adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit, reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to universal health coverage through resilient, inclusive and people-centred healthcare systems.
BRICS leaders stressed the importance of sharing experiences, innovations and best practices to improve health outcomes.
The declaration, however, reaffirmed the WHO’s coordinating role in global health cooperation and welcomed the outcomes of the 16th BRICS Health Ministers’ Meeting held in Chandigarh in July.
BRICS leaders identified tuberculosis as a major global public health challenge and called for coordinated action, sustained research investment, technology sharing and greater collaboration to accelerate efforts to end TB.
World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala thanked PM Modi for supporting the multilateral trading system and meaningful WTO reform. She further said the two leaders discussed the current state of global trade, along with opportunities and challenges facing the WTO.
India is hosting the two-day 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi as the group’s 2026 chair.
India’s BRICS chairship follows the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, reflecting PM Modi’s people-centric approach and the principle of ‘Humanity First’.
