Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on Friday as the 18th BRICS Summit brought global leaders together.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation and major international developments during their meeting on the sidelines of the summit. Their conversation included the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime commerce as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers.

PM Modi once again underlined India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy offer the most effective route towards resolving conflicts. He further conveyed India’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts.

The two leaders exchanged a warm hug before beginning their second meeting of the year. They had previously met during the 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek on August 31.

The Ministry of External Affairs said PM Modi and President Putin reviewed cooperation across several areas, including politics, economics, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people exchanges. They visited INNOPROM India, which took place in India for the first time from September 9 to 11.

The leaders interacted with participants and highlighted the exhibition’s role in strengthening industrial and trade relations.

PM Modi and President Putin examined India-Russia cooperation in multilateral forums, with particular attention to BRICS under India’s 2026 chairship.

Both sides agreed to maintain their engagement to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. The partnership has continued to develop despite geopolitical challenges.

Putin invited PM Modi to attend the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit in Russia.

The Prime Minister accepted the invitation, while both countries will finalise the dates through diplomatic channels.

PM Modi and Putin had met in Delhi for the 23rd Annual Summit in December 2025 before their Bishkek interaction.

Their latest meeting reinforced the continued importance of high-level engagement between India and Russia on bilateral, regional and global issues.
