Prime Minister Narendra Modi met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New Delhi on Friday and called for urgent reforms to multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council.
The leaders met on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit. They discussed India’s BRICS Presidency, ongoing conflicts, freedom of navigation, sustainable development, human-centric artificial intelligence, renewable energy and global food security.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Had a wonderful meeting with UN Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres. Discussed multiple subjects including the ground covered in India’s BRICS Presidency, India’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism and the urgent need for UN reforms.”

The Ministry of External Affairs said Guterres congratulated PM Modi on India’s fourth BRICS chairship.
Both leaders stressed the importance of multipolarity and backed reforms that would make multilateral institutions reflect present-day global realities.
Guterres appreciated India’s close cooperation with the United Nations.
The UN Secretary-General’s office said both leaders discussed India’s BRICS priorities and the need for institutions that represent the realities of the 21st century. Their talks covered conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
The leaders examined their impact on the global economy, particularly food and fertiliser access.
Guterres reaffirmed the principle of freedom of navigation during the meeting.
The two leaders discussed the growing threat posed by lethal autonomous weapons.
Prime Minister Modi wished Guterres success for the remainder of his tenure as UN Secretary-General.
Their meeting highlighted India’s push for stronger multilateralism and institutional reforms amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
