BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi Calls For 10-Point Global Governance Reform Roadmap

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on BRICS nations to use the grouping’s 20th anniversary as a springboard for a more ambitious phase of cooperation.

Key Takeaways

Speaking at the opening session on ‘Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism’ in New Delhi, PM Modi said India had placed people at the centre of its BRICS chairship.

“Resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability have been our priorities. Alongside these priorities, we have placed special emphasis on connecting BRICS cooperation with the common people. With this vision in mind, more than 350 meetings were organised. We had the opportunity to welcome your teams to approximately 30 cities,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister said the grouping had developed a clear identity on the world stage over the past two decades. He described its 20th anniversary as a ‘coming of age’ moment that should bring greater responsibility alongside growing capabilities.

PM Modi stressed that BRICS does not oppose any country and should continue advancing through consensus while respecting different perspectives.

PM Modi argued that the grouping now needs to convert its consensus into concrete results. He proposed a ‘BRICS Continuity and Implementation Mechanism’ to prevent the annual change of presidency from disrupting institutional progress.

“This would enable the follow-up of all initiatives and outcomes through the ‘Troika’ arrangement,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi called for BRICS to develop a new and ambitious agenda for the next 20 years. He further drew attention to the Global South’s limited influence over international decision-making despite facing many global crises.

PM Modi urged BRICS members to jointly prepare 10 proposals for reforming global governance and turn them into a BRICS reform roadmap by the next summit. He called for replacing the existing ‘pyramid of privilege’ with a ‘platform of partnership’, where every nation receives a meaningful voice and stake in global affairs.
