Delhi International Airport Limited is expanding international passenger-handling capacity at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled for September 12 and 13, with preparations anticipating a rise in international air traffic.
Pier C at Terminal 3 will progressively begin international operations from the night of September 9. Authorities will first use Pier C for international arrivals.
From the evening of September 10, the facility will handle both international arrivals and departures.
Security checks, operational preparations and required approvals will precede the phased opening.
Once fully operational, the expansion will raise Delhi airport’s annual international passenger capacity by 50 per cent. The capacity will reach 31 million passengers per annum.
Delhi Traffic Police has issued advisories on restricted routes and urged residents and cab operators to review the arrangements.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said Delhi Police had prepared detailed traffic plans for the September 11-13 summit.
Officers are conducting rehearsals to ensure smooth movement of visiting dignitaries.
Gupta said authorities are sharing advisories through the Delhi Police website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and print media. He said 22 diversion points would redirect public traffic, while trained personnel would guide commuters along alternative routes.
Central and state government offices and schools in Delhi will remain closed on September 11.
The measure aims to reduce road congestion and minimise inconvenience during the summit.
