Breakthrough At Metro Hospital Noida: Giant Kidney Tumour Removed, Complex Transplant Conducted

In a major breakthrough in medical care, Metro Hospital Noida has successfully removed a massive 22 x 23 cm kidney tumour. The complex surgery marks one of the largest tumours ever reported and removed in the Delhi-NCR region.

The patient, 70-year-old Avinash Chandra Mathur from Ghaziabad, approached the hospital with an abnormally enlarged left renal mass and hypertension.

Doctors diagnosed renal carcinoma (pTNM Stage T3aN2), a high-risk malignancy requiring urgent intervention. The team treated him with a Lap-Assisted Left Radical Nephrectomy on 30 May 2025.

Technically Demanding Surgery

The procedure was led by Dr Ashutosh Singh, Senior Consultant and Head of Urology, assisted by Dr Prabhat Ranjan and Dr Prashant Thakur. The anaesthesia team, headed by Dr Kapil Singhal and Dr Deepak Thapa, managed perioperative complexities in this high-risk geriatric case.

“Given the rare size and anatomical distortion caused by the tumour, this was a clinically and technically demanding case,” said Dr Singh. “Our hybrid laparoscopic-assisted approach ensured complete tumour removal while prioritising patient safety and preserving anatomical structures.”

Surgical highlights included 4-port laparoscopic access, complete mobilisation and excision of the tumour-bearing kidney, renal artery and vein ligation, ureter control, and management of multiple collateral vessels. The patient was monitored in the Surgical ICU and showed steady recovery. He was discharged on 6 June 2025 in stable condition.

ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplant Success

In another achievement, Metro Hospital Noida successfully performed a live-related ABO-incompatible kidney transplant on 25 June 2025. The 60-year-old male recipient had a B-positive blood group, while his wife, the donor, had AB-positive – a combination posing a natural immunological barrier.

Doctors adopted an intensive desensitisation protocol starting 10 days before surgery. This included Rituximab injection, plasma exchange, and antibody titre reduction to 1:4. The surgery was uneventful, and the patient is recovering well, with post-operative creatinine levels maintained at 1.2 to 1.3 mg/dL.

“These outcomes demonstrate how advanced transplant science has become at our centre,” said Dr Shiv Chadha, Senior Consultant Nephrologist. “ABO-incompatible transplants now offer a new lease of life to patients with limited donor options.”
