BMC Elections: As the voting for BMC elections concluded on 15 January, exit polls began to surface from late evening. The tightly contested and highly heated election finally ended on Thursday. Counting will start from 10 AM on Friday.
Asia’s richest Municipal Corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, has been the most discussed topic among Mumbaikars for the last few weeks.
Four exit polls indicate that the BJP and Eknath Shinde Sena will win the elections comfortably, securing around 138 seats. The BMC have 227 seats, and 114 is the majority.
Axis My India, along with JVC, has also predicted a significant victory for the BJP and Shiv Sena.
JVC has projected 138 seats for the BJP and 59 seats for Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena combined. It has predicted that the Congress will secure 23 seats.
The Sakal poll is projecting 119 seats for the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance and 75 seats for the UBT. It predicted that Congress would not get more than 20 seats.
The Axis My India poll is expecting the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance to win 131-151 seats, and the Shiv Sena UBT-plus alliance to win 58-68 seats. It appears that the reunited Thackeray factions will garner the Maratha and Muslim votes.
Exit polls have suggested that North and South Indians voted for the BJP in large numbers.
Furthermore, young voters and women also seem to have voted for the BJP. However, exit polls are not always accurate.
Congress has the strongest hold on Muslim voters in Mumbai. The party could get 41 per cent of the Muslim vote.
According to the Axis My India exit poll, the BJP alliance could get 12 per cent, and the faction led by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena could get 28 per cent of the Muslim vote.
