The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of the Congress party over the Indus Water Treaty, accusing it of prioritising foreign interests over national welfare.
BJP leaders also questioned the Congress’s ability to work for society, stating that a family-run institution cannot envision the broader public good.
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma told IANS that Congress historically operated as a ‘one-man show, one-man army’.
Sharma said, “Their leaders used to say, ‘India is Indira, Indira is India’. A party that has been a family institution cannot conceive of the welfare of society.”
He further alleged that India’s rivers and water resources were mismanaged under Congress, claiming, “The rivers are ours, the water is ours, yet 80 per cent of it was given to Pakistan. Under the Indus Water Treaty, India cannot even stop the flow from its dams or clean them without Pakistan’s consent.”
Addressing the treaty, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, “At the time of partition, river divisions were finalised nearly 13 years after independence. Despite 80 per cent of the land being in India, the then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru allocated 80 per cent of the river water to Pakistan. This restricted India’s rights over its own rivers, and our farmers bore the cost.”
Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar added, “Analysing the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, it seems that India gave away 80 per cent of the Indus water to Pakistan and received nothing in return. Congress overlooked farmers’ needs, and even after signing, India needed Pakistan’s approval to remove silt from its own dams.”
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari described the situation as shocking. “The rivers belong to India, the water belongs to India, yet 80 per cent was given to Pakistan. Considering Pakistan’s size and population compared to India, the allocation should have been proportional. Nehru made this decision without consulting the Cabinet or following democratic processes. Even his own MPs called this foolish. Congress and Nehru’s tenure caused losses to the country.”
