The ruling BJP government in Haryana, led by Manohar Lal Khattar, is poised to terminate its alliance with Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) ahead of the imminent Lok Sabha elections, according to sources cited by India Today. Meanwhile, due to the growing fractures within the ruling coalition comprising the BJP and the JJP, Manohar Lal Khattar has tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Haryana.
Allegedly, the state Cabinet might tender its resignation, and BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are anticipated to convene at the Raj Bhavan by 1 pm on Tuesday. It’s speculated that the BJP could forge a new coalition government by incorporating six Independent legislators along with one from the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP).
The BJP presently holds 41 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly, while the Congress has 30 and the JJP holds 10. Additionally, there are seven Independents and one MLA each from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the HLP. Union Minister Arjun Munda and party leader Tarun Chugh have been dispatched to Haryana as observers by the BJP and are expected to partake in a legislative meeting scheduled for 12 pm.
Nayan Pal Rawat, an Independent MLA, expressed that he gleaned indications of the alliance dissolution during his meeting with the Chief Minister. He stated, “We have already pledged our support to the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government. We also deliberated on the strategy for the Lok Sabha elections. It seems that the process of severing ties with JJP has commenced,” as reported by news agency ANI.
This development unfolds amidst strained relations between the BJP and JJP concerning seat-sharing for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Reportedly, the JJP is eager to contest two seats, a proposition met with disfavour by the BJP, which aims to vie for all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana.
Dushyant Chautala, the Deputy Chief Minister, is purportedly scheduled to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to discuss the future of the BJP-JJP alliance, as per insider sources. Despite Dushyant Chautala’s prior meeting with BJP president JP Nadda on Monday regarding seat-sharing, the discussions yielded no resolution.
Following the 2019 Haryana assembly polls, wherein the BJP failed to secure a majority, the BJP and the JJP formed a post-poll alliance. The state assembly elections are slated to take place later this year.
