The West Bengal unit of the BJP has announced plans to seek Geographical Indication (GI) tags for several traditional Bengali sweets that currently lack formal recognition.
The initiative aims to promote Bengal’s iconic sweets at both national and international levels while strengthening the state’s traditional food industry.
According to the party, applications for GI recognition will be pursued through the state government. The process will be carried out in phases based on district-level data collection, expert opinions and research findings.
BJP leaders said coordination with the state government on the matter would remain open.
What a GI Tag Means
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a legal certification granted to products with a specific geographic origin and distinctive qualities, reputation or characteristics linked to that location. It serves as a mark of authenticity and helps protect traditional heritage.
BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya said in Delhi on Friday, “Bengal is known for its sweets. There are many sweets whose popularity needs to be increased further. The state will appeal to the BJP government in this regard.”
The party’s initial list includes Malda’s famous Kansat and Cooch Behar’s Mohan Bhog, which are expected to be prioritised in the first phase. Hooghly’s Kamarpukur Sada Bonde and Nabadwip’s Lal Dahi are also under consideration.
According to BJP leaders, these sweets are closely linked to Bengal’s regional history, culture and economic potential.
Beyond securing GI tags, the BJP is proposing the creation of district-level ‘sweet hubs’ aimed at developing organised infrastructure for production, marketing and exports.
Party leaders believe GI recognition will preserve tradition, while the hub model will help expand business opportunities.

Party sources said a formal proposal will soon be submitted to the state government. Consultations with sweet manufacturers, food researchers and experts will also take place.
The objective is to increase the visibility of Bengali sweets in both domestic and global markets.
Political observers noted that the initiative carries both economic and cultural significance.
