BJP MP Accused Of Sexual Harassment: Bail Hearing In Delhi Court Draws Attention

BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, faced the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi for his bail plea hearing after being accused of sexual harassment, assault, and stalking by six women wrestlers. The court presided over by Special MP MLA Judge Harjeet Singh Jaspal, heard the arguments and reserved its order for the announcement at 4 pm Today.

Earlier on Tuesday, the court had granted Singh and co-accused Vinod Tomar, former assistant secretary of WFI, a two-day interim bail and directed them to furnish bail bonds worth Rs 25,000. On June 15, the Delhi police had filed a charge sheet against Singh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The six-time MP was charged with offences under IPC sections 354, 354A, 506 (criminal intimidation), and 109 (abetment of any offence, if the act instigated is committed as a result and there is no express provision for its punishment).

Another FIR was registered against Singh based on allegations made by a minor wrestler, invoking the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accusations in both cases involved instances of sexual harassment, inappropriate touching, groping, stalking, and intimidation by Singh over a decade.

However, the father of the minor claimed that the accusations were false and were levelled by her to get even with the MP over a perceived injustice.

In response to the minor wrestler’s case, the court sought a response from the girl and the complainant on the final report filed by Delhi police to seek cancellation of the case against Singh. The police had submitted the report, stating a lack of corroborative evidence after due investigation, looking for the cancellation of the FIR related to sexual harassment allegations against the MP.

The women wrestlers’ cause garnered support from celebrated grapplers such as Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Asian Games champion Vinesh Phogat. Their protest drew backing from opposition parties and farmer organizations. The case against the MP has sparked significant attention and debate.

As the court proceedings continue, the nation watches closely to see how the judicial system addresses the serious allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar.
