In a strategic political move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to be tightening its grip on Madhya Pradesh politics, and notably, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The BJP, in its second list of candidates for the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, has conspicuously omitted to announce Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s constituency. Chouhan, who has been the party’s longest-serving chief minister, now finds himself in an uncertain position.
Instead of naming Chouhan’s constituency, the BJP has deployed its top leaders to manage the ambitions of senior regional leaders and bolster seats where they traditionally face challenges. This move not only throws the chief ministerial race wide open but also underscores the party’s determination to consolidate its presence in the state.
As of now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is at the forefront of the BJP’s electoral campaign in Madhya Pradesh, adding to the intrigue surrounding Chouhan’s role in the upcoming elections.
In a surprising and noteworthy development, the BJP has fielded seven sitting Lok Sabha members, including three union ministers, in the state elections. This announcement came shortly after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhopal. Notably, four of these candidates have previous experience as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
Among the prominent leaders entering the state electoral fray is the BJP’s national general secretary, Kailash Vijayvargiya, who is contesting a state election a decade after winning the Mhow seat in his native Indore district for the second time in 2013. Additionally, Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Singh Patel, and Faggan Singh Kulaste are among those vying for positions in the state assembly.
The BJP’s move appears to be an effort to balance its senior regional leaders’ roles in the election and harness their experience and influence across various regions and castes. By fielding seven sitting MPs, the party aims not only to secure vulnerable seats but also to leverage these seasoned politicians’ presence to influence neighboring constituencies.
Madhya Pradesh Congress chief and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath responded to these developments by suggesting that the BJP is conceding defeat. He argued that the BJP’s candidate list contradicts the party’s claims of 18.5 years of governance and Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s development initiatives in the state.
Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala went a step further, asserting that the BJP’s decision to bring in top central leaders reflects the party’s fear of losing in the state. He suggested that Chouhan anticipates his own defeat but aims to undermine these prominent leaders, who are political competitors, in the process.
Among the other Lok Sabha MPs joining the state elections are Ganesh Singh, a four-time MP from Satna seat; Riti Pathak, a second-time sitting MP from Sidhi Lok Sabha seat; Rakesh Singh, a four-time MP from Jabalpur; and Uday Pratap Singh, a third-time MP from Hoshangabad seat. These candidates have been strategically placed to strengthen the BJP’s prospects in specific constituencies.
