Tension escalated in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, following a brutal attack on Gobindo Adhikari, a local BJP activist, his wife Namita Adhikari, and their son Gourab Adhikari on Saturday.
The incident, which left the family critically injured, unfolded amidst a charged political atmosphere in the region.
Gobindo Adhikari, known for his active participation in BJP’s local activities and serving as the party’s polling agent in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, along with his injured family members, was initially rushed to state-run MR Bangur Hospital.
Due to the severity of their injuries, authorities transferred them to SSKM Medical College & Hospital for further medical care.
Police swiftly acted on the incident, leading to the arrest of three individuals identified as Archan Bhattacharya, Subhash Debnath, and Sumit Debnath in connection with the attack.
BJP leaders have stirred a political controversy by alleging that the assailants associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress party are behind the arrests.
Local BJP leader Debnath Chakraborty asserted that the assailants who attacked Gobindo, his wife, and his son were active Trinamool Congress workers. He attributed the assault to recent electoral tensions, noting that BJP had reportedly taken the lead at the polling booth where Gobindo was present.
In contrast, local Trinamool Congress councilor Rajib Purohit dismissed the allegations, attributing the incident to a longstanding personal feud between the involved families rather than a political vendetta.
As the investigation unfolds, probing the motives behind the attack and verifying the political affiliations of the arrested individuals, the incident has sparked a political slugfest in the area.
Authorities are actively investigating the matter to ascertain the precise circumstances and motives behind the assault on the Adhikari family.
