Belgian PM Bart De Wever Begins India Visit With Tribute To Mahatma Gandhi At Rajghat

On Thursday, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever began his three-day India visit by paying floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the gesture highlighted the common values that support the strong relationship between India and Belgium. He said Gandhi’s message of peace, non-violence and human dignity continues to inspire people across the world.

De Wever reached New Delhi on Thursday for his first visit to India since taking office in February last year. Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken is accompanying him as part of the delegation. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth received the Belgian Prime Minister on his arrival.

During his stay in New Delhi, De Wever will likely meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bilateral discussions. The talks will cover the full range of India-Belgium relations, along with regional and global developments of mutual interest.

The Belgian Prime Minister will likely address a Confederation of Indian Industry business event, with discussions linked to the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

After completing his Delhi engagements, De Wever will travel to Mumbai. His programme there will include meetings with stakeholders from sectors such as diamonds, ports and logistics.

The MEA said the visit will likely strengthen cooperation between India and Belgium in trade and investment, defence and security, technology, renewable energy, connectivity and people-to-people ties. It will, however, support deeper engagement between India and the European Union and wider Europe.
