India-Belgium Defence Ties: Rajnath Singh Holds Talks With Theo Francken On Military Cooperation

On Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Belgian Defence and Trade Minister Theo Francken held talks in New Delhi, with discussions centred on expanding military ties and cooperation between the two countries’ defence industries.

Following the meeting, Rajnath Singh said several Memoranda of Understanding and contracts had been signed. He said the agreements would help combine Belgian technology with India’s manufacturing capabilities and scale.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever and Theo Francken are visiting India as part of a delegation focused on closer security and military cooperation, along with opportunities for defence companies from both countries.

Belgium plans to work with India on an industrial roadmap, while the Belgian Defence College will likely conduct its World Study Trip in India in 2027.

Fifteen Belgian defence companies, mostly represented by their chief executives, are participating in the mission.

A key agreement between the Belgian Security and Defence Industry (BSDI) and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) will likely support joint development and production under the Make in India initiative.

Belgian firms are looking at opportunities to supply technology for Indian programmes, including rockets and maritime security systems.

Potential areas of cooperation include mine countermeasures, autonomous maritime systems, underwater robotics, advanced sensors, port and subsea infrastructure protection, radar, ammunition, command and control and counter-drone systems.

Belgian Defence and Trade Minister Theo Francken said Belgium viewed India as an important strategic and economic partner, highlighting the growing security links between Europe and the Indo-Pacific. He arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for the official visit.
