Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Barapullah Phase III corridor on September 29, bringing a long-awaited East Delhi-South Delhi road connection closer to public use.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh are also expected to attend the inauguration programme.
Singh inspected the completed project on Saturday and reviewed arrangements for the upcoming opening.
The elevated corridor will connect Mayur Vihar Phase I with Sarai Kale Khan and integrate with the existing Barapullah network.
The extension will create a continuous route of around nine kilometres towards central and South Delhi, including the AIIMS area.
Officials expect the new link to improve traffic flow between eastern and southern parts of the capital.
The authorities approved Barapullah Phase III in 2014 and started construction in 2015, initially setting 2017 as the completion target.
Repeated delays extended the construction timeline and pushed up the project expenditure to around Rs 1,635 crore.
PWD officials have now completed both ramps of the elevated structure, with one connecting Mayur Vihar and the other joining the existing corridor near Sarai Kale Khan.
The project also includes an extra-dosed bridge across the Yamuna, which now forms part of the corridor’s connecting structure.
The completed elevated section and bridge will support the new connection between Mayur Vihar and the existing Barapullah route.
The infrastructure will also provide a dedicated cycle track alongside facilities designed to make the corridor more accessible to pedestrians.
The project therefore combines vehicular connectivity with additional mobility infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.
The Delhi PWD is currently completing the remaining arrangements before the September 29 inauguration.
