A pre-dawn medical crisis at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) culminated in the safe birth of a baby girl inside an airport ambulance, underscoring operational readiness at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
At 5:17 AM on February 10, airport medical services received an alert regarding a female transit passenger in distress within the International-to-International corridor.
The 26-year-old Tanzanian national, approximately 36 weeks pregnant, reported acute abdominal pain while awaiting her onward international connection.
Medical personnel responded immediately. Doctors reached the site within minutes and assessed that the passenger was in advanced labour.
Contractions had intensified, and her membranes had ruptured, signalling imminent delivery.
Teams acted without delay. Staff transferred the expectant mother onto an ambulance buggy stretcher and moved her through the terminal lift to the airside ambulance.
Airline representatives and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officers facilitated rapid passage.
Terminal Operations coordinated with immigration authorities, who promptly issued a temporary transit visa to prevent procedural impediments.
At 5:40 AM, the ambulance departed for a nearby hospital, accompanied by airport doctors and airline staff. En route, labour progressed swiftly.
Inside the moving vehicle, the medical team, however, stabilised the mother and assisted with appropriate positioning.
Crowning commenced shortly thereafter. At 5:45 AM, the team delivered a healthy baby girl inside the ambulance.
Doctors administered immediate neonatal care. The infant cried upon birth. Staff clamped the umbilical cord, performed oral suction and initiated Kangaroo Mother Care to regulate temperature and breathing.
By 5:55 AM, both mother and child reached the hospital’s emergency department.
The obstetrics and gynaecology unit completed post-delivery procedures. Hospital authorities later confirmed that both remained stable and continued to receive standard medical care.
Dr Kritika, Dr Madhu and Dr Kisley led the intervention, supported by paramedics Madhuri and Ashok, and ambulance driver Omkar.
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), demonstrated coordinated crisis management through seamless collaboration across medical, operational and security teams.
The episode, however, highlights infrastructure resilience and people-centric preparedness within India’s expanding aviation ecosystem.
