Assam Floods: Amit Shah Assures Centre’s Support To Himanta Biswa Sarma

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday assured Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of all possible assistance from the Centre as floods continued to affect more than 22,000 people across six districts in the state.

Sharing the update on social media, Sarma said Shah called him to review the flood situation, particularly in the worst-hit Dhemaji district.

Taking to X, the Chief Minister posted, “I thank Hon’ble Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji for his phone call and enquiring about the flood situation in Dhemaji. I have briefed him on the relief and rehabilitation measures presently underway. He has also assured us all possible support and assistance from the Government of India to deal with this situation.”

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), continuous rainfall in Assam and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh has affected 22,124 people across six districts: Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur and Kokrajhar.

Dhemaji remains the worst-affected district, where 15,483 people have been impacted after persistent rainfall inundated large parts of the area.

ASDMA said floodwaters have entered 96 villages and damaged nearly 1,690 hectares of agricultural land, affecting crops and the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.

The authority also reported that the disaster affected 48,199 livestock.

The flood bulletin stated that the Disang River in Sivasagar district is flowing above the danger mark at Nanglamuraghat, raising concerns of further inundation in low-lying areas if heavy rainfall continues.

Heavy rain and erosion caused a partial collapse of the railway bridge over the Simen River in Dhemaji district, disrupting rail connectivity.

Northeast Frontier Railway has suspended train services between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations.

Officials said relief and rehabilitation operations are underway in the affected districts, while the administration remains on alert amid forecasts of continued rainfall.
